Game Development

About me

Unity, movement, and the question of why something feels right.

My name is Finn Willmann and I publish as Willmuth. That name is on itch.io, on Instagram and under my work. Same person behind both.

I study at Hochschule Macromedia and build games in Unity. The range goes from a seven day jam in a team of three to a solo exam project where I handled everything myself: concept, code, levels, visual design.

The thread running through all of it is game feel. For GrappleGlory I did not build the courses by eye. I calculated them against the controller's actual physics values and rebuilt the momentum system until grapple, wallrun and jump chain together without losing speed. Details like that get me further than long feature lists.

Working in a way others can follow matters to me almost as much. Every project comes with a log: problem, solution, reasoning. Wrong diagnoses stay in there and are marked as such. That has saved me hours more than once. Above all it taught me not to trust a plausible explanation until it accounts for every symptom, not just the loudest one.

Tools

Unity and C# are home. Blender for 3D assets, custom shaders, and editor tools wherever work repeats and needs to become reproducible. I do sound myself as well. In GrappleGlory the interface sounds are synthesised at runtime rather than played back from files.

What I am looking for

Alongside my studies I am looking for practical experience, ideally an internship. Longer term I want to build a career in game development.
